Court May Order Google to Censor ‘Torrent,’ ‘RapidShare’ and ‘Megaupload’

Google has suffered a setback in its case against the music industry group SNEP. Last week the French Supreme Court ruled that Google can be required to censor the search terms ‘Torrent’, ‘RapidShare’ and ‘Megaupload’ from its Instant and Autocomplete services. The court argued that Google indirectly facilitates copyright infringement by failing to filter these terms. The case is now going to the Appeals Court for a final decision.

Anyone else getting fucking sick of all this unnecessary censorship bullshit?!

    Because that's what this is!

honestly i agree with SOPa and PIPA etc because torrents take money away from artists .. kim dot com and others became very wealthy off the backs of others . something had to be done .. in fact free downloads should have never been allowed in the forst place.. artists have lost out time because of free downloads..

    .
im not for censorship at all . . i am for paying royaltys to artists and as for the production companys... well they need to be kept going too otherwize we would never know about new artists and we would never be able to buy records/tapes/cd's and download clean versions of songs or films

Except that a torrent is not an illegal file to have, so I do not accept that they would censor "torrent."

Rename all torrents to, ummmm, waterfall.

Then when they get pissed about 'waterfall' rename them again.

right , i didn't know that but as far as im aware it is still downloading media for free. . media that people had to produce at a cost. a cost that they can't recoup if people use torrents.

good idea.. isn't that how internet language got created in the first place.. i think though in this day and age it is harder to do because of the sheer size of the online community as compared to what it was when it started out .. but a good idea none the less

If only you knew how much money they could make in a concert. These artists make so much money that the internet download should be irrelevant. It's free advertisement basically and some artists out there don't mind it at all.

Google is just a search machine, just put the site in your bookmarks and bam, no problemo!

Your point is well taken; however, there are other ways to go after "people who steal music."
FYI: Torrents are used a lot in the open source community, e.g., to save on bandwidth/hosting costs for sharing linux distros and open source software (most of which is free).

I think they should ban the word 'censorship' and replace it with 'Poontang'.
