U.S. Army photographer killed in mortar mishap.
The U.S. Army has released an image taken by Spc. Hilda I. Clayton, a visual information specialist (combat photographer) moments before she was killed by a defective mortar round during a 2013 live-fire training exercise in eastern Afghanistan. Four Afghan National Army soldiers were also killed when the mortar tube accidentally exploded. Clayton's name has since been added to the Defense Information School Hall of Heroes at Fort Meade. The award for the winner of Combat Camera's annual competition was also named after her.
