San Francisco, California — On August 28, 2023, at approximately 10:22 p.m., uniformed officers with the San Francisco Police Department responded to the 300 block of Jones Street regarding a person armed with a knife and threatening people. When officers arrived at the scene, they found 54-year-old Richard Everett standing in front of a multi-story apartment with a large knife in his right hand. Police tried to talk to him and get him to drop his knife, but he refused and told officers, "God Almighty gave me this knife." According to police, another individual on the scene, who claimed to know Everett, attempted to deescalate the situation. According to the SFPD, Everett still refused to drop his knife, despite momentarily placing it in his waistband. Later, Everett attempted to step off the sidewalk toward officers while waving the knife, forcing officers to open fire. Officers and paramedics treated Everett at the site until he was taken to the hospital with what officials described as life-threatening injuries. Officers seized the knife at the scene, as well as the belt Everett reportedly used to bind the blade to his wrist. According to jail records from the San Francisco Sheriff's Office, Everett is being held without bail on suspicion of several criminal charges, including brandishing a deadly weapon and assaulting a police officer.
