Coolidge, Arizona — On February 5, 2026, around 7:30 p.m., a Coolidge police officer noticed a vehicle parked along Palo Verde Avenue and stopped to check on it. The officer began speaking with a woman about damage to her car, including a shattered windshield, and the conversation appeared calm. At that point, there were no signs of violence, and the officer was simply gathering information. While the officer was talking with the woman, her estranged husband, 54-year-old Francisco Canales Aguilar, left his nearby home and drove to the location. Surveillance video later showed him carrying a machete when he left the house. Authorities say Aguilar had also called a family member to say goodbye before arriving. When he reached the scene, Aguilar exited his vehicle holding the machete and walked toward the officer and the woman. Despite repeated commands from the officer to drop the weapon, Aguilar continued advancing, leading to the officer firing his weapon. Aguilar was pronounced dead at the scene, and the investigation was turned over to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
