In Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, free speech is a crime and a blindfold is standard equipment for the secret police. Human Rights Watch documented journalists hiding from intelligence agents, activists held 40 days in darkness, and a man whose wife "sees him once a week but doesn't know where he is." The government's response? Detaining people in villas and calling it an investigation. In Kinshasa, the only thing harder to find than a missing activist is a functioning court.
