A grave was desecrated on Saturday (12) at the São José Cemetery, in the Cruz das Armas neighborhood of João Pessoa. A body was exhumed, burned, and decapitated by a group of suspects.
According to the Military Police, the body belongs to 22-year-old Jonailton José Venâncio da Costa, who was shot and killed inside the Taipa Community Kitchen in the Costa e Silva neighborhood. That crime occurred on Thursday (10), when he entered the facility to hide from a group of suspects but was shot.
The victim's mother, who asked not to be identified, told TV Cabo Branco that she learned about the desecration of her son's body via Instagram. She demanded better security at the facility:
"Where is the security at this cemetery? Not just this one, but others as well, because yesterday, while we were carrying the coffin, shots were fired. I had to request police support. I asked the cemetery management if they have guards here. Is a guard just supposed to stay here and die? The family is suffering twice over. Only a mother understands my pain. I want justice."
According to the Military Police, the crime was allegedly carried out by members of a rival faction. Information provided to the authorities indicates that the head was thrown in front of the victim's house.
Search operations are currently underway to locate the severed head.
In a statement, the João Pessoa Department of Urban Development (Sedurb) reported that the cemetery's security guard was ambushed and subdued by armed suspects. Operations at the cemetery have been suspended pending the conclusion of the proceedings, and footage from local Smart City surveillance cameras will be reviewed to assist in the investigation
