I think the beating was an unnecessary outburst of energy and emotion. If he had already neutralised the attacker’s hand holding the gun and wrested it from him, the sensible thing to do would have been to shoot the attacker to kill him and then flee. Now the victim will go to prison for the offence of causing bodily harm, whilst the attacker will recover from his injuries and attempt to take his victim’s life again.
If the victim had killed him, it would have been in self-defence, and that is a mitigating factor.
