A Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata turned into a death trap on Saturday night. Rain sent a massive crowd rushing for shelter, and a rumour that the pandal might collapse triggered a stampede. Eighteen people were killed—13 women, 3 children, and 2 men. At least 25 others were injured. The lanes were too narrow, the volunteers were local youths with no crowd-management training, and no ambulance was on standby. The organisers and private security guards have been detained. In Kolkata, a festival meant to celebrate the goddess ended with families waiting outside a hospital morgue.

Back in the Summer of 2005 when I was in Chennai on business, we got caught in this absolutely HUGE crowd of people walking toward some festival site. The fuck with that. I got to the outside of the pack as soon as soon as I could - it was like being sucked into a liquid and it was only a short walk to the restaurant.

It’s October so I don’t think it involves Elephants On Parade Near Power Lines, but I swore one false move and I’d be Pancake Boy.
