GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. – An internal review of a deputy-involved shooting determined a Greenville County deputy was justified in shooting and killing a suspect.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday released a community incident briefing detailing a December 9, 2025 incident which ended with a deputy involved shooting and the death of 29-year-old Johndy Lading Rodriguez.
According to sheriff’s office, just before 11:30 p.m. on December 9, Greenville County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a female had been assaulted at the Poinsett View Apartments.
At the scene deputies encountered a victim of an assault and Rodriguez. In body camera footage of the incident, Rodriquez told deputies he and the victim had been arguing, but denied hitting her.
Body camera videos also show the victim telling deputies she came home from work and was changing clothes when Rodriquez, who she identified as her boyfriend, pushed her and began hitting her in the ribs.
In the released body camera videos he can be heard telling a deputy “you ain’t arresting me, I’ll tell you that,” and “I ain’t going down without a fight.”
After seeing Rodriquez had picked up the knife, the deputy backed out of the apartment with his gun drawn and repeatedly told Rodriquez to put the knife down.
Deputies attempted to treat Rodriquez at the scene until EMS could arrive to transport him to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office were called to investigate the incident and determine if the deputies violated state law in shooting Rodriquez.
