Colorado Springs, Colorado — On Saturday, January 31, 2026, at approximately 10 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a call for service about an ongoing disturbance between two individuals, possibly involving a rifle. When officers arrived on scene, they attempted to contact a female, later identified as 30-year-old Micaela Pasillas, who matched the description of one of the individuals involved in the disturbance. She was not armed with a rifle, as the initial 911 call stated, but was carrying a large knife. Pasillas ran from officers as they attempted to contact her. Officers commanded her to stop running, but she refused. She then dropped the knife as officers pursued her on foot. Pasillas continued running from officers and then entered the front driver’s side seat of a marked CSPD cruiser and attempted to drive away. Officers commanded the female to exit the vehicle and began trying to physically remove her from the driver’s seat.
While officers were struggling to remove the female from the vehicle on the driver’s side, an officer on the passenger side of the vehicle observed Pasillas reaching for the duty shotgun located in the vehicle. At that time, the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle fired three times, striking the Pasillas at least twice. The officers then removed the Pasillas from the driver’s side of the vehicle, took her into custody, and began rendering emergency medical treatment. Officers on scene recovered a knife that the Pasillas was carrying during the foot pursuit. She was transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released from the hospital and was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center. She has been charged with Felony Menacing. Additional charges may be filed. The directly involved officer is James Mckinstry, a patrol officer assigned to the Stetson Hills Division. Officer Mckinstry has been employed by CSPD for 14 months. No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.
