The gunman behind the deadly mass shooting at a bar in downtown Austin is now being investigated by federal authorities for a possible terrorism motive after opening fire on a crowded nightlife district early Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Ndiaga Diagne, began shooting outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden just before 2 a.m., killing two people and injuring 14 others. He was armed with both a handgun and a rifle.
Images from the scene show Diagne wearing a hooded sweatshirt labeled “Property of Allah” as he carried out the attack.
According to police, Diagne first fired from inside his vehicle, shooting through the window at people gathered outside the bar. He then drove further down the block and continued firing at pedestrians.
Three officers who were already patrolling the area responded within seconds and confronted the gunman, opening fire and killing him at the scene.
Federal investigators say items recovered from his vehicle, including religious material, are being examined as part of a potential ideological motive. Authorities have also pointed to a possible link to recent U.S. military actions abroad, though no official motive has been confirmed.
Diagne, a U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, had a prior arrest history in both New York and Texas.
The shooting unfolded as the nightlife district was packed with people leaving bars. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while 14 others were transported to hospitals. At least three remain in critical condition.
