Hartford, Connecticut — On February 27, 2026, around 11:00 a.m., a family member of 55-year-old Steven Jones called 911 to seek assistance because Jones was having an acute mental health crisis. The caller indicated that Jones had a knife in his hand. Several Hartford police officers were dispatched to 687 Blue Hills Avenue in Hartford. Officer Josue Charles was the first officer to arrive at the scene. When he arrived at 11:07 a.m., Jones was standing on a small front stoop at the entrance to his apartment. He was holding a large knife. Jones then ventured out to the sidewalk on Blue Hills Avenue and began to walk towards Officer Charles who maintained distance from him. When Jones failed to comply with demands that he drop the knife, Charles deployed his Taser several times at Jones, but the Taser deployment was unsuccessful in immobilizing Jones or securing his compliance. At 11:09 a.m., Officer James Prignano arrived at the scene to assist Officer Charles. Jones began to chase Prignano around his cruiser and out to the middle of Blue Hills Avenue, but Prignano was able to backpedal and maintain distance from Jones. Jones then slowed to a walk but was still holding the knife.
At 11:10 a.m., Officer Jackeline Torres arrived at the scene and began to assist the other officers in persuading Jones to drop the knife. With their service firearms drawn, the three officers formed a small semi-circle around Jones on the street while continuing to engage with him. At no point does it appear that Jones spoke to the officers. Several bystanders who were standing close-by also attempted to persuade Jones to drop the knife. At 11:12 a.m., Officer Joseph Magnano arrived near the intersection of Blue Hills Avenue and Euclid Street, exited his cruiser and walked over to where Jones and the officers were standing. Magnano approached Jones with his firearm drawn and ordered him to drop the knife. Jones began to walk towards Officer Magnano who repeatedly ordered Jones to drop the knife and stated: “You’re going to get shot.” Officer Magnano walked backwards to maintain the distance between himself and Jones. When Jones and Officer Magnano walked into the middle of the intersection of Blue Hills Avenue and Euclid Street, Officer Magnano yelled: “Last time, drop the knife, drop it.” Officer Magnano then fired nine shots at Jones with his service weapon. Jones fell to the ground, suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Officer Torres quickly began to render medical aid to him. Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived within two minutes and transported him to the hospital. He remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

That's murder. The man was suffering a mental health relapse, but the situation was under control. Nobodys life was in danger, the public were safe, and he hadn't attacked a police officer, or even said a word to them. To shoot a man like that, under those circumstances, NINE times is utterly barbaric, disgusting and indefensible.
Those who say "he was warned", or "he didn't follow police orders, so he deserved it", are basically defending police who shoot after giving an order. That's bullshit, not following a police order is NOT punishable by death, or deserves to be shot nine times.

American police are trained to aim for "center mass" (the torso) rather than legs to maximize the likelihood of hitting a moving target under high stress and to effectively stop a threat. Aiming for legs is inaccurate, risks missing and harming bystanders, and can still be fatal if the femoral artery is hit.
Even then, I think he should’ve only shot the lad 4 times MAXIMUM. Maybe 6 if he was still up then somehow.
