Based on data from tracking organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), New America, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), white supremacist and other far-right extremists have been responsible for more mass shootings and extremist-related killings in the USA over the past decade than jihadist (Islamist) extremists. While jihadist attacks, when they occur, tend to be highly lethal (e.g., the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting), white supremacist ideology has been associated with a consistently higher volume of violent plots and murders in the US post-9/11.

Of the 444 people killed at the hands of extremists over the decade ending in 2023, 335 (roughly 75%) were killed by right-wing extremists, with white supremacists responsible for a significant portion of those deaths. White supremacists have been linked to multiple high-profile mass shootings, such as the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting (23 killed) and the 2022 Buffalo grocery store shooting (10 killed). Jihadist incidents represent a smaller percentage of total murders but have included lethal events, such as the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016.

From 2022 through 2024, all extremist-related murders documented in the US were tied to right-wing extremism, with white supremacists making up the majority of those killers.

A January 2025 vehicular attack in New Orleans by an individual claiming allegiance to ISIS was the first major jihadist-related mass casualty event SINCE 2017.
