Visitors should stay in well-known tourist areas, avoid traveling at night outside cities, and monitor local media for safety updates.

High caution is advised for all of Mexico due to violent crime and the threat of kidnapping, even in tourist locations.
I personally advise against all but essential travel to the city of Tecate and parts of the state of Chihuahua. Other areas experiencing high instability include Jalisco (including parts of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta) and parts of the east and south.
Major tourist destinations like Cancun and Riviera Maya are generally safer, but have experienced incidents of violence.
Criminal activity is a problem in the state of Mexico, with risks of armed robbery and car theft.

Here’s some tips too

Use Toll Roads: Stick to federal toll roads ("cuotas" rather than free roads ("libres" for safer travel.
Transport Safety: Use official taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than hailing cabs on the street to avoid robbery.
Stay Updated: Monitor local media for safety incidents and follow the advice of local authorities.
Health: Be aware of food/water-borne illnesses, such as Cyclospora.
