The overwhelming majority of Muslims, scholars, and theologians interpret the Quran as a guide for peace, justice, and mercy, emphasizing that taking an innocent life is forbidden and compared to killing all of humanity.
While there are verses in the Quran related to conflict, scholars, both Muslim and non-Muslim, generally interpret these within the historical context of specific battles and defense, rather than as a general, permanent mandate for genocide
Like any major world religion, Islam has a wide spectrum of interpretations. Extremist groups (such as ISIS or Al-Qaeda) promote a violent, takfiri ideology that is overwhelmingly rejected by the vast majority of Muslims globally.
Throughout history, Islamic empires and societies have often demonstrated periods of co-existence and protection for non-Muslims (such as under the dhimmi system, which, while unequal by modern standards, provided for the safety of Christians and Jews), rather than a policy of extermination.
Therefore, equating a religion followed by nearly two billion people with an inherent, design-level intent for genocide is inaccurate.
