NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Sheriff Chris Nocco said a man shot another man and woman who were clearing a lot of land, then shot at a responding deputy.

The incident happened Monday afternoon in the Davista Avenue and Sawtell Street area of New Port Richey.

Nocco said the man and woman, who knew each other, were approached by Aaron Rodriguez, 32, who started arguing with them.

The man called 911 and was shot while on the phone with a dispatcher, the sheriff said. The man later died at the scene.

Nocco said Rodriguez also shot the woman, then ran into his garage.

Responding deputies ordered Rodriguez to drop his weapon, and Nocco said that the suspect refused and shot one of his deputies, a K-9 handler.

Deputies returned fire, and the suspect was shot.

“I know in life we teach people stuff,” Nocco said. “We tell people, if you put your hand on something hot like a boiling pot, your hand’s gonna be burned. If you play with glass, it’s gonna cut. If you aim a gun at a Pasco Deputy, you’re gonna get shot, and that’s what happened today. There’s no apologies, there’s no sympathy he got shot and I feel horrible for the victims.”

Nocco said the K-9 handler is expected to be OK and that he and the K-9 deputy will return to work.

The woman and suspect were taken to the hospital, with no word on their conditions by 5 p.m. Friday.

“That suspect caused everything,” Nocco said of Rodriguez.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is taking over the investigation.
