A woman has died after being beaten to death with a hammer at D & D Convenience store at 3500 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Fort Myers, Florida, United States
Fort Myers Fire and Lee County EMS crews responded to the incident at 7:14 AM Thursday morning, April 2nd, 2026.
Initial reports indicate that a man with a history of mental illness entered the store armed with a hammer and began attacking the female store clerk. The man also caused significant damage to a vehicle parked outside of the store.
The woman sustained significant traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the front of the store at 7:27 AM.
The man has reportedly been identified by police and unconfirmed reports indicate that he may also wanted in connection with an unsolved homicide that occurred several months ago on Hough St.
CCTV video from the scene shows the man wearing a yellow shirt, black shorts, orange sneakers and a white backpack. Officers say he fled northbound following the incident.
Officers, with the assistance from K9 and LCSO Aviation, established a perimeter and three schools were locked down as a precaution. The suspect was ultimately not located.
No further information has been made available.
The scene remains active as the investigation continues.
The Fort Myers Police Department is investigating.
