During those1.5 seconds that the victim was in the air, the train could not have slowed down noticeably — it simply isn’t designed for that. Roughly speaking, its deceleration was about 0.5–1 m/s². Meanwhile, even in the weakest homemade catapults, acceleration can reach tens of m/s².
Moreover, one should subtract from the train’s deceleration the difference in air drag — since air slows a person much more than a train, especially in the early stage of flight.
Another factor is the larger angle between the person’s direction of motion and the train’s direction of travel, compared to the line of sight. So the person’s speed should visually appear LOWER, not higher.
