It just looked like a tickle with a sickle to me... Just to remind him never to do whatever he'd done to piss them off, ever again.

If they'd wanted to kill or maim him, they'd have used proper blades for the job. This little episode certainly wasn't as brutal as advertised. I mean FFS, the old fella walked away.
