Fake video. Everyone knows that black people can't swim

1 +1 BigHeartSmallWorld 2 months ago

@MinLillaKanin The notion that "Black people can't swim" is a myth based on a stereotype, not a physical limitation. While statistics consistently show that a disproportionate number of Black children and adults do not swim, this is due to historical, social, and cultural factors rather than genetic inability.

England, research suggests that 95% of Black adults and 80% of Black children do not swim regularly.
A 2010 study found that nearly 70% of African American children surveyed had low or no swimming ability, compared to 42% of white children.
Due to lower participation, Black children in both the UK and US are significantly more likely to drown than their white peers.

HOWEVER! THIS IS FOR A REASON!
Historically, in the US particularly, black people were prohibited from using public swimming pools during the Jim Crow era, leading to a generational gap where parents didn't swim, so they couldn't teach their children.
Many black communities have limited access to pools, and swimming lessons can be expensive.
The stereotype has become self-perpetuating—often passed down from parents to children, resulting in fear of the water.
For many Black women, hair care is a significant barrier to entering a pool, as chlorine can be damaging and special care is needed.

While some studies have shown slight differences in body fat distribution and bone density—with some indicating that some black males have higher bone density (making them slightly less buoyant) compared to white counterparts—these differences are minor and do not prevent anyone from learning to swim.
Before slavery, many Africans were excellent swimmers. The ability was lost over time due to the factors above.

Organizations like the Black Swimming Association (BSA) in the UK and Make a Splash in the USA are actively working to break these stigmas, encourage swimming, and provide access to lessons.
Black swimmers, including Olympic swimmers like Alice Dearing, are breaking down the visual stigma.

In short, black people can and do swim. The low participation rates are a social issue that is now being actively tackled to ensure safety and inclusion in water-based activities.
