They:

Run toward the bull on foot
Place two decorated barbed sticks into the bull’s shoulders/neck area
Use timing and agility to avoid being gored

The purpose is to weaken the bull’s neck muscles and lower its head, making it easier for the matador to perform the final phase.

A small nuance: sometimes the matador himself will place the banderillas (especially if he wants to show extra skill), but usually it’s the banderilleros who handle this part.
