That 20% has half the value the whole country had of rare earth minerals, natural resources, not speaking of f.e. the base very much needed for the Russian navy at Sevastopol. By now the other half is in the hands of US and other "investors". Ukraine should have taken the deal and stick to the Minsk Agreements, because that was better than being used as a patsy of ZOGs.

Russia had many things to mind concerning to start a war, the claim to protect ethnic Russians was and is a valid standpoint, but it was of least of importance.. The NATO, the US itself fucking with them, starting orange (later rebranded as colored) revolutions to overturn pro Russia governments in ex-soviet member states was way more important. Not letting NATO to their doorsteps, meanwhile make a stop NATO trying to force them out from the only unfrozen harbor available for the Russian navy has more to do this war.

The persecution of minorities in Ukraine happened and is happening to this day; and those ethnic Russians, Poles, Romanians and Hungarians did not move to Ukraine, but their (ancestors) birthplaces had been gifted by Soviet-Russia without ever asking the locals. Letting AZOV (praised now, but condemned rightfully as neo-nazis before the 2022 war events) murder several thousand ethnic Russians among them children - was probably not the brightest move Ukraine made..

@Logan A small correction, Igor: dictator Putin has TEMPORARILY OCCUPIED up to 20% of Ukrainian territory, sacrificing millions of Russian lives in the process. And those occupied territories will still have to be given back eventually — just ask Putin’s predecessor, Hitler, who conquered the same lands three times faster and with far fewer losses than Putin.

Right now at great expense Ukraine cannot gain back those territories, economically (having half the rare earth minerals, natural resources), and militarilly (keeping Sevastopol, and not letting NATO freeroam on its own in the region) Russia achieved it's basic goals, and can continue despite all the spending of American and European taxpayers' money.

Ukraine won't have control over it's natural resources, the most of the landmass, is already in unpayable debt, and the loss of lives, the number of those who fled and won't come back is way too high - no matter how this war ends. Ukraine has the right to defend itself, but it has to be noted, and not overlooked it is a patsy, and won't win, that won't be a win.
