Thank God all the knives in India are rusty and dull.

@Dysmorphia while it’s a common observation that many inexpensive or high-carbon steel knives in India—particularly those used by street vendors or in older kitchens—can become rusty and dull, the claim that all knives in India are in this condition is false.

Many traditional Indian knives (like chaku or certain kukris) are made of high-carbon steel rather than stainless steel. While carbon steel takes a very sharp edge and is easy to sharpen, it is highly susceptible to rust if not dried immediately after use.
High humidity in many parts of India, combined with frequent washing and leaving knives in wet sinks, contributes to oxidation (rust) and faster dulling.
Modern, high-quality, and rust-resistant stainless steel knives are readily available in India through brands like Victorinox, Kai, and various Ikea options.
Even highly rusted, neglected knives can be restored to a sharpened state using simple methods like scrubbing with a paste of baking soda and water, using a lemon and salt, or using a rust eraser.
While some inexpensive, traditional knives might be less refined than European counterparts, they are often designed for specific cutting tasks (like thin slicing) and can be kept functional with proper maintenance.

In short, it’s not the knives; it’s the laziness of the person whom wields it.
