December 16, 2025. Birmingham, Soho Road. 11:15 AM. A husband and wife, 54 and 47, walked hand in hand on the pavement. Harinderpal Athwal, 41, swerved his Vauxhall Corsa onto the curb without braking, slammed into both, and kept going. The husband died at the scene. The wife suffered life-changing injuries. CCTV then showed Athwal reversing, driving over the man a second time, and fleeing. He was already banned from driving — six days earlier, magistrates had suspended his license. He also had two prior drink-driving offences. Athwal pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury, driving while disqualified, no insurance, and failing to stop. On May 13, 2026, Birmingham Crown Court sentenced him to 11 years and 3 months, plus a 20-year driving ban. The judge considered a lifetime ban but held back. The victims' daughter said: "My dad was taken from us in the most brutal way imaginable. He not only killed him but ran over him again."
