How do I feel about India? It’s bad. Not as bad as others (like Afghanistan, which is ruled by the Taliban) but still bad.
For starters, they’ve made a law which basically banned trans people. India has approximately 1.5 million to over 2 million transgender people. You see the problem here? They basically OUTLAWED the right for 2 MILLION PEOPLE to exist as who they really are.
According to research in 2024, 79% of gay men and 44% of bisexual men have experienced verbal abuse or physical violence.[13]
According to a 2025 data from the Pew Research Center, opposition to homosexuality in India remains high, with 59% of respondents labeling it "morally unacceptable".
India’s ~200 million Muslims face systemic discrimination in education, employment, and housing, with critics stating that government policies, such as the citizenship law, are intended to disenfranchise them.
Reports have documented the use of forced evictions and property demolitions as a form of collective punishment, targeting mostly Muslim communities.
There’s also high pollution levels, sanitation issues, significant poverty, gender inequality, and bureaucratic corruption as major problems.

On the other side, however, India has made massive strides in digital governance, reducing poverty, and improving infrastructure, acting as a major global economic and technology player. It’s also very culturally rich, from what I’ve heard.

Ultimately, India is a diverse country that cannot be simplified to a single label. Its reputation is often a polarized mix of positive and negative experiences. And while India remains a pluralistic society, its religious and ethnic minorities face significant, increasing, and often violent challenges to their rights and safety.
