Charlotte County, FL - Bodycam footage shows the moments a suspected gunman was killed by Charlotte County deputies and North Port police after a deadly shooting on Malone Avenue prompted a manhunt.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said the alleged shooter, Matthew Ryan Cross, walked up to Charles Van Di Veir Anderson's front door and shot him in the head on March 30. The sheriff said an altercation had started a few days prior after Cross reportedly stole a gun from Anderson's home.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, Cross got a ride to the store near the intersection of Veterans Boulevard and Yorkshire Street at approximately 12:45 p.m.
Cross then walked into the woods after getting dropped off. Deputies were in the area investigating a report of a man with a gun; however, they did not know it was Cross.
At approximately 1:20 p.m., Cross then emerged from behind a tree and shot at deputies. CCSO said one deputy discharged his service weapon.
According to CCSO, Cross ran to a larger wooded area on the east side of Yorkshire Street, where deputies heard another shot.
In the video, Cross can be seen coming out of the woods near Hillsborough Boulevard at approximately 3:12 p.m., pointing a gun at his head while walking towards deputies. Deputies then told him to drop it, but Cross didn't.
Two Charlotte County deputies and five North Port police officers fired their weapons. Cross was killed during the encounter.
"He even made threats of doing suicide by cop ... The firearm he had was the one that was stolen a couple of days prior. When he emerged from the woods, the firearm was empty," Prummell said.
Prummell said deputies had received numerous mental health calls over the years involving Cross.
