A 26-year-old student was shot and killed on the night of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in front of the Grau Técnico de Piedade, located on Rua Nossa Senhora de Fátima, in the Piedade neighborhood of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the Recife Metropolitan Region.
The victim was identified as Michael Batista Aquilino, who was studying Occupational Safety at the institution. He was wearing his course uniform and was on the sidewalk, near a snack kiosk, when he was surprised by two men who arrived on a white Pop 100 motorcycle.
The passenger got off the vehicle and fired several shots at the student. Michael tried to flee, but fell on the sidewalk and continued to be shot. He did not survive his injuries and died at the scene before help arrived.
Security cameras recorded the entire criminal act, from the suspects' arrival to their escape.
The Military Police were called and cordoned off the area for forensic work by the Institute of Criminalistics. The body was sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Recife.
Hours after the crime, one of the suspects was arrested in the act by an off-duty police officer. The detainee was identified as Mateus Ferreira dos Passos, 26 years old, and charged with homicide and receiving stolen goods. The stolen motorcycle and the weapon used in the murder were seized from him. His accomplice managed to escape.
The victim was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the crime, but no details about his legal situation or criminal record were released.
The case is being investigated by the 12th Homicide Police Station, linked to the Department of Homicide and Protection of Persons (DHPP). The motive for the crime has not yet been clarified.
