Today, July 11, a tragic incident occurred in Yerevan. At around 21:50, the 112 operational management center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia received a report that on the Ashtarak Highway, near the "Armenia" TV company, a thick-trunked tree had been uprooted and fell onto a car and a moped.
As photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan reports from the scene, one rescue squad from the Yerevan Fire and Rescue Detachment of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs promptly arrived at the location.
Patrol officers from the 2nd Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Yerevan Regiment of the Police Patrol Service also arrived at the scene, led by Regiment Commander Andranik Khachatryan, Battalion Commander Arsen Sargsyan, Deputy Battalion Commander Davit Hovhannisyan, and Company Commander Ararat Petrosyan.
An operational group from the Mashtots Department of the General Department of Community Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also arrived at the scene, led by Department Head Davit Avagyan.
Rescuers, patrol officers, and community police established at the scene that due to strong winds, a decayed and aged thick-trunked tree had snapped and fallen onto a Honda passenger car and a moped that were driving by at that moment, killing the moped driver on the spot.
Information about the incident was forwarded from the Mashtots Police Department to the Ajapnyak and Davtashen Administrative Districts Investigative Division of the Yerevan Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia. An investigative team subsequently arrived from the division, led by Division Head Edgar Baloyan and the duty investigator of the day.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the incident, and the identities of the deceased, the car driver, and the vehicle owner are currently being determined.
The photojournalist reports that employees of the "Greening and Environmental Protection" Community Non-Commercial Organization (CNCO) of the Yerevan Municipality—more commonly known to the public as "Begoyan's institution"—had tried to remove the tree several times because it posed a real danger. However, a group of so-called citizens opposed the removal; had they not, this tragic incident would not have occurred today.
