Residents of the Polowijen area in Malang City were shocked by an incident in which an elderly man was run over and killed by a train on Wednesday (July 22, 2026). At the time of the incident, the elderly man, identified as Gunawan Sujatmiko (77), a resident of Jalan Sembilang VII/13, Polowijen, Blimbing, Malang, reportedly lay down on the tracks intentionally.
Shortly after, the Arjuno Express train passed by and ran over him. The moments leading up to the act were captured by a nearby CCTV camera. The victim, who was initially walking along the edge of the tracks, was seen suddenly lying down directly in the middle of the tracks.

The Head of Public Relations for the Malang City Police, Police Inspector Second Class (Ipda) Lukman Shobikin, stated that the victim was run over and killed by the Arjuno Express train heading from Malang to Surabaya on Wednesday morning (July 22, 2026). The victim was lying in the middle of the tracks at around 5:36 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB), which was recorded by a security camera from a nearby house.

"Shortly after, residents notified the railway crossing guard on Jalan Sembilang that someone had been hit by a train at KM 43.800/900," Lukman said.

Upon checking the location, it was confirmed that the victim was deceased, having sustained severe, fatal injuries after being run over by the Arjuno Express, driven by train driver Bryan Sangga Bahtera.

"The victim died at the scene after being struck by the train. Residents and the crossing guard reported the incident to the Blimbing Police, who then inspected the site and conducted a crime scene investigation (TKP)," he added.

Police and medical personnel arrived at approximately 6:00 AM WIB. Assisted by local residents, officers evacuated the victim's remains from the scene.

"The victim was then evacuated by the team and taken to Saiful Anwar Regional General Hospital (RSSA) for a post-mortem examination. The investigation confirmed that the victim was a 77-year-old resident of Jalan Sembilang VII/13," he said.

The victim's body was later claimed by his family after the examination at Saiful Anwar Hospital (RSSA) Malang. The family declined further autopsy procedures and signed a statement acknowledging the cause of death.
